Teachers change lives every day

Thank you, Mrs. Hogan

Author: Asha Whiteway
Teacher's name: Denise Hogan
Teacher's school: Carbonear Collegiate

Without hesitation I can say Mrs. Hogan is by far one of the most influential people in my life. I have had the opportunity to bond with so many amazing teachers throughout my k-12 schooling, but Mrs. Hogan stands out amongst them all; and not just because of her bright red hair!

Mrs. Hogan is one of the most caring individuals I have ever met and she genuinely cares for the success of each and every student. Not only does she care for her students, but she is overwhelmingly passionate for the subjects she teaches. Any teacher who gives a student the opportunity to enjoy pre-calculus MUST be a gem.

Beyond the regular school hours Mrs. Hogan is always busy with something for the school. She offers after school and lunchtime tutoring, plans almost all of the activities and spirit weeks, plays a critical role in the planning of grad, and often chaperones on various trips. I have never seen another teacher put so much time into the extra-curricular side of school.

Denise was never actually my teacher for any of my courses but I worked with her through student council. In level two, I ran for vice-president of the student council and almost dropped out of the running because I was nervous to say a speech to the entire school. Denise, without any connection to me at all, told me to stop being silly and do it. So I did, and that decision created one of my most cherished friendships.

Through student council, Mrs. Hogan allowed me to explore various leadership roles. She guided me through planning various spirit weeks, activities and fundraisers, often done by her and I alone; even when she was on maternity leave in my senior year. I could never imagine a better person to run the student council, and most definitely could never choose a better person to have worked with, as I am sure many past executives would say.

Mrs. Hogan always has, and continues to help me through so many trials and tribulations and has stood by my side from day one. She was always there to offer me advice and tell me whenever I was doing something I probably shouldn’t do. She was one of the very few people who supported me in everything I did or wanted to do. Instead of criticizing, she encouraged and guided me through various problems, in both life and math. She uses her easy going personality to show students that it’s okay to be weird, and it’s okay to do something for yourself; even when not many people approve of it. She is by far one of the most down to earth and understanding people I know, and her sarcasm always kept me laughing.

Denise Hogan is a key reason why I had such an amazing high school experience. I sincerely want to thank her for all her life lessons that have helped me get to where I am now. I have created so many memories with this woman and I cannot imagine not having her in my life! From her convincing me to say my silly speech in grade eleven, to the time I accepted ‘Female Sentinel of the Year’ at awards night and she was waiting to give me a hug and tell me how proud she was, Denise has stood by my side and made a huge impact on who I am today.

Thank you, Mrs. Hogan!
