Learning in Motion
Crescent Collegiate, Blaketown
When Lindsay Janes was teaching her grade-9 students about energy and motion, she had no idea how much her physics class was changing the trajectory of Robert McCarthy’s life. Or how he would one day show his thanks.
In 2019, Lindsay began using a wheelchair after surgery on a spinal tumour. Suddenly the world was difficult to navigate. Even opening the fridge was a challenge. Curbs became roadblocks.
Robert, then in grade 12, wanted to help. He applied what she taught him to design a 3D printable ramp that she could carry in her backpack.
Today, Robert is following the path launched in her classroom. He is studying mechanical engineering at McGill and part of the university’s rocket team.
Lindsay now teaches physics remotely, but stays connected with her beloved school in Blaketown through the Crescent Makers — a group of students who use innovation and 3D printing to make devices and toys more accessible.
